In our current rapidly changing world, we have been collecting moments that have given us the opportunity to reflect and share what is important to us. We’ve also been trying to figure out ways to reach out differently to our community.
As part of the Festival of Emergence hosted by the Design Research Society in September 2021, we released new prompts 3 days a week for the duration of the festival. We held live collection sessions via Zoom engaging attendees to collectively respond to the release of our prompt and share their submissions in a different and engaging way.
Check out the submissions from MMM x Festival of Emergence event below!

"This is everything in my fridge with yellow on it. No fruit or Vege. But that probably reflects the reality of lockdown and less frequent shopping. It is not something to be proud of."

"I bought this nail polish in Taiwan for about 50cents from the clearance bin, and I didn't understand why no one else wanted it. Yellow is such a beautiful colour, yet it was discarded to the clearance bin? Unbelievable. Years later, it found itself paired with this yellow-spined picture book that was found in a closing down sale. Yellow snaps my attention wherever I look, and always finds its way back into my home."

"For the first time, I decided to try cooking a home-made veggie pie from scratch and the whole process and the outcome made me smile. I loved putting time and energy into something that could then be shared with the family over good chats and a yummy dinner!"

"This book is one I picked up years ago on a whim at one of my favorite local bookstores at home in DC. At the time, I was newly engaged, enjoying my work, and quite happy but was curious to learn about Rubin’s Happiness Project. Since this book and others like it, I have decided to balance my work with academic research relating to designing for human flourishing (a balance of health and happiness). Just one example of how a random read shifted the trajectory of my life. It now figuratively and literally supports my work/research (i.e., my laptop)."

“When I was younger I used to DIY a lot of my dance performance costumes and I made this tiny tiara out of hot glue to wear in my role as the “evil queen” from Snow White.”

“This is a black and yellow marble art piece I made with my friend a while back. A bit of a learning curve at first, but it was a lot of fun just getting to play around. By the time we got to this point in our process we’d found our rhythm! Yellow is such a fun and vibrant colour. This piece is probably one of my favourites of the lot.”

"This is Zoe's favorite tennis ball. I bought her a whole pack of different coloured ones but she loves the yellow one the most. In fact, when we play fetch with the other coloured tennis balls, she immediately drops it and tries to find the yellow ball."

"While being in lockdown in Tauranga I have noticed that lots of people have kōwhai trees planted outside their houses. Every time I go out for a walk I have kept an eye out for these yellow flowers have blossomed. For weeks there were no kōwhai flowers in sight until one day I looked up. Towering over me was the biggest kōwhai tree I have ever seen with the yellow flowers all blossoming.”

“My dog’s water bowl is yellow and every time she needs water she brings me the bowl. I think it’s cool because it shows how smart she can be but also how mischievous she can be. If we don’t realise she needs water she will bite the bowl (hence the chew marks around the edge).”

"Sort of yellow - this is kölsch, which is the beer of Cologne, Germany, where I did my study exchange. Was excited and surprised to find a place brewing it in NZ!"

"I am thankful for my plants. They cheer me up when I am sad, and always surprise me with their beauty. I love this one specially because it was a present from my father who passed away 9 months ago."

"I'm thankful for my mum - who made this siew pao for me to deliver during lockdown. She only made a few, but gave me the majority of the batch, which sums up how my mum has always taken care of me. I also had to ration them because they were delicious."

"I’m thankful for having a work buddy during this long lockdown :) Most mornings my doggo, Java, sits underneath my desk while I work. She knows it’s time to go to my home office when I pick up my earphones. She keeps me company while I work."

I am thankful for my friends. I have been doing lockdown in Tauranga and am starting to get very homesick but my friends have constantly been checking up on me and requesting zoom calls to make sure I am surviving.
